DIY: Volkswagen Käfer Anhänger aus Clay/Beetle Ornaments

(Post sponsored by Volkswagen)

This year, we decided to go for a more modern, unusual look for our Christmas tree. And, together with Volkswagen, we came up with this wonderful craft project: home-made Christmas tree ornaments. Our tree features more than just baubles this year – we’ve also decorated it with hand-made Beetle ornaments made of modelling clay. Interested in making them yourself? Take a look at our DIY craft tutorial!

So geht’s:

Instructions:
Before you start moulding the clay, you’ll need to think about what kind of shape you want your ornaments to be. We chose a Volkswagen Beetle silhouette. First of all, we sketched out the shape on paper and cut it out. Then we rolled the modelling clay flat on a cutting board. You can use an old rolling pin or a glass bottle with a smooth surface for this. Roll out the clay into a thin layer, place your paper stencil on top, and cut out your shape with a Razor knife.

If you make any bumps in the clay while you’re cutting it, don’t worry – you can smooth them out with your finger. How does the cut-out shape look? Remember, it’s going to dry like this. So make sure that the clay has been rolled out evenly and the surfaces are smooth. Place the shapes on baking paper and allow to dry for at least 24 hours. The thicker your ornaments are, the longer they’ll take to dry.

As soon as the Beetle decorations are completely dry, you can give them a coat of varnish. But this step is optional, and you can skip it if you want. We gave our decorations a coat of white varnish, which hardly made a difference to how they originally looked, but made the surface smoother. To ensure that the ornaments would be immediately recognisable as the Beetle, we used a black porcelain painter pen to draw on the main features of the cars. You can draw the individual lines with a pencil first and then go over them with the porcelain painter pen. The pencil lines can be easily erased with a rubber.

After you’ve finished drawing the lines on the ornaments, you can attach a ribbon to the back of each one using sticky tape and then hang your finished Beetle decorations on your tree. We think they complement our little white baubles perfectly and make the tree look fantastic!
