DIY: Road Trip Travel Checklist & Hacks

(Post sponsored by Volkswagen)

It’s summer so it must be holiday time! We admit, we’re more than ready for a break; we look forward to kicking back and relaxing for a few days very soon. Although most people go to the coast or plan a city break, this year we’ve fallen for the romantic road trip. What could be better than driving through the countryside, visiting small, out-of-the-way places and simply stopping wherever you want? No pressure, no particular plan. We’ve been thinking about it, and have come up with the best ever packing list for any trip. We’ve also added a few tips and tricks for packing your bags.

Was man dafür so alles braucht?

Especially on a road trip or when camping, there are some things you really need, like clothing and toiletries, but don’t forget leisure activities like bikes or games, and anything you need for the car, too. We’ve already created a practical games board in conjunction with Volkswagen for playing on the go; next up is our ultimate road trip packing list. You’ll need to be properly organised and pack well to save space. Our tips will no doubt be useful when packing for any holiday.

Tipp 1:

Tip 1: First draw up a list of what to pack. Whatever holiday you’re planning, you can download and use our road trip packing list (German version | English version) or our city break packing list free of charge. Of course you might want to make your own custom list; we’ve provided DIY instructions below. It’s important to check what the weather will be like, and pack accordingly.

Tipp 2:

Tip 2: Even the biggest suitcase has limits. So don’t just fold your clothes, but roll them up, too. It makes each item take up less space and fit more easily and flexibly into your case. It also stops items like shirts from getting too creased. Underwear, socks and other small items can be added at the end to fill the gaps, and really use up every inch of suitcase space. When selecting your holiday wardrobe, make sure that the individual garments go with your other clothing items. That will leave less work for you to do during the holiday in terms of choosing your outfits: the perfect style, every time.

Tipp 3:

strong>Tip 3: Heavy items like shoes should always go at the bottom of your case, by the wheels. This prevents the case from overbalancing and makes it easier to transport. And if you don’t have a special bag for your shoes, you could always use shower caps to wrap them up.

Tipp 4:

Tip 4: There’s quite an art to packing toiletries and beauty products. Pressed powder can break up, and liquids like shampoo and shower gel tend to leak. But that needn’t be the case! We’ve got a great trick for powder: just slip cotton wool pads between your powder and the lid of the compact, and wrap your make-up bag up in clothing. Shower gel and the like can be wrapped in cling film. Simply cut a piece to size, open the lid and clamp the film down across the nozzle. Then nothing can actually leak out, and you can relax.

Tipp 5:

Tip 5: Transporting your jewellery isn’t easy. If you pack fine chains and bracelets into a small bag, they can’t get lost in the depths of your case – but they might still get tangled. Next time, why not thread each necklace or bracelet through a drinking straw, then put the straws into a bag. The advantage of straws is that you can cut them to the right length and use them for necklaces and bracelets of different sizes. You can pin earrings to a piece of cardboard: we went for plain white. Just make a hole in the card with a needle, then fasten the earrings in place. Now everything has its place and unpacking will be much less stressful.

Tipp 6:

Tip 6: A road trip’s about keeping your options open, so take a bit more stuff than you normally would: bikes, tent, etc. After all, you never know where you’ll end up and what you’ll want to do there. And most importantly, don’t forget to make a playlist. Great music is an important part of the road trip experience!

So geht’s:

How to do it:
Mark out the different areas using a pencil, and think about what categories you’ll need on your list. We left room at the top for headings and pictures, then divided our list into four categories – Basics, This and that, Clothing and Beauty. You’ll need to know how much room each category will take up, so write your list out on rough paper first before you transfer it to the final version. Use a pencil at first, then once you’re happy with the design you can trace over the pencil and colour it in. We wanted to focus on the car, so that’s the only bit we painted. Finally, use an ink pen to go over the lines and add illustrations if you like. Your checklist is now complete and you can start packing and crossing things off. For a digital version, simply draw your illustrations first then scan them in, then use a graphics program to arrange them and add or edit items digitally. You can change things around as often as you like.
